Below is a testimonial from Pamela in San Diego, CA

"Just wanted to let you know that I was very pleased with your recommendation of Mike at SERVPRO of Coronado. He inspected my downtown unit Monday and let me know there was no longer any moisture, it was completely dry, and that there was actually no need for his services. He was also able to recommend a company to test my air quality. It's unusual to find a contractor that doesn't try to sell you on something unnecessary. I would certainly recommend Mike to your other clients."

SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW/Coronado is looking forward to spending time at our beautiful beaches this summer.  Unfortunately it's also getting closer to fire season, which is always a concern in San Diego, due to the lack of rain. Listed below are some tips in preventing accidentally finding carelessly dumped hot coals.

San Diego Burn Institute

  • Always wear sandals or shoes getting to and from the beach to avoid hot, buried coals.
  • Be aware of tar and hot coals from the fire rings on the beach.
  • Only dispose of hot coals in proper containers; do not cover hot coals with sand! Buried coals remain hot for up to 24 hours and may cause a serious burn injury to an unsuspecting beachgoer.

SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW/Coronado spends a lot of time at the beach during the summer.  As the beaches slowly begin opening up, we hope everyone enjoys and stays safe this summer.

The past few decades has seen a rapid advancement in the technology and techniques used in the restoration industry.

These advancements allow SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW/Coronado Professionals to restore a property back to a preloss condition quickly, reliably, and more effectively.

The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) sets practical standards for restoration and cleaning.

IICRC

Listed below are a few examples of the advanced technology we use here at SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW/Coronado

Detection Equipment:

  • Moisture Meters-used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials.
  • Infrared Camera- used to identify water location for thorough water removal

Extraction Equipment:

  • Extractors-used in cleaning carpets and upholstery and in removing water from floors following a water damage.

Air Moving Equipment:

  • Air Movers- used at a high speed, the air movers cause moisture to evaporate at a faster pace.

Dehumidification Equipment:

  • Dehumidifiers- By extracting water vapor from the air, dehumidifiers lower the humidity. They pull the moist, humid air in and discharge dry, warm air. The dry air acts like a sponge, absorbing moisture from wet materials.

Odor Removal and Deodorization:

  • Air scrubbers- Remove airborne contaminants and control the air quality during the restoration and cleanup process.
  • Thermal Foggers and Deodorization agents: Used to remove odors and/or contaminants on your property.

How To Prevent Fire Damage In San Diego

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

National City Fire Department Trailer Have Questions? Please call (619) 435-0365

SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW/Coronado specializes in fire and water damage restoration; it's the cornerstone of our business. In our past experience we have seen the differences in a home or business having functioning smoke detectors versus non-functioning.  With Daylight Savings time recently happening it's a good time to talk about the importance of smoke detectors.

Smoke detectors are some of the most important things in your home or business, because they are proven lifesavers.  More fatal fires occur at night when people are sleeping.  Listed below are some tips on installing and maintaining properly working smoke detectors, courtesy of the San Diego Fire Department.

San Diego Fire Department

Installation

  • Install a smoke detector on each level of your home.
  • The detector should be centrally located between the bedrooms.
  • Place smoke detectors in each bedroom.
  • If you, or someone in your home is deaf or hard of hearing, consider installing an alarm that combines flashing lights, vibration and/or sound.
  • Mount smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings (remember, smoke rises). Ceiling mounted alarms should be installed at least four inches away from the nearest wall; wall-mounted alarms should be installed four to 12 inches away from the ceiling.

Test and Maintain

  • Test detectors once a month.
  • Detectors should not be painted.
  • Most units should be vacuumed once a year to remove cobwebs and dust that may impair a detector's sensitivity.
  • Never paint smoke alarms. Paint, stickers, or other decorations could keep the alarms from working.
  • Smoke alarms don't last forever. Replace your smoke alarms every ten years. California law requires that the new alarm you buy will have a ten-year, sealed battery.

What to Do if Your Alarm Sounds

  • Don't try to fight the fire yourself.
  • Get out of the house as quickly as possible.
  • Call 9-1-1 as soon as you are out of the house.

With unexpected July rain in San Diego, SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW/Coronado has been receiving a number of calls regarding potential water damage caused by leaking roofs.

San Diego County and it's surrounding counties are known for having beautiful weather year round.  A lot of times the rain is a welcome sight, but along with traffic accidents, roof leaks are common after a good San Diego storm, especially in the summer months.

San Diego Weather Forecast

If you have water stains that come across the ceilings or run down the walls, the cause is probably a leaking roof.  The hard part in tracking down the roof leak, is that you usually need a rain storm to detect it, which makes it especially hard in San Diego.

Listed below is a 5 Star google from a Coronado resident who had a roof leak after a storm.

"Outstanding company that was very professional and responsive to my needs. Not every day I have a roof leaks and SERVPRO understands this! Recommend to all who may need this kind of service."

Reasons for using SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW/Coronado for Water Damage:

When a flood or any other water related event occurs like a broken supply line, drainage leak or a damaged water heater, it's necessary for you to act quickly by getting professional flood restoration services. Cleaning up water damage involves more than just drying and wiping the residue away.

Delaying makes the damage worse because the water will seep into the walls, furnishings, floors, and this may result in mildew and mold growth.

Water mitigation can be devastating to any residential or commercial property, but when one gets professional services from the certified technicians at SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW/Coronado you can be assured it is being handled properly.

Water damage mitigation

Water in a home or water in a business can cause damage like oxidation of metal (rust), rotting wood, composite building materials delamination, and microbial growth. If water cleanup and the drying process isn’t started immediately, the stability of the structure can be compromised.

IICRC

Restoration Solutions

The first thing to consider when you have a flooded home or business is safety. The first assessment made will be if there are any risks posed to anyone in the home or business due to the water damage. The next step is locating the cause of the problem (be it a pipe leak, supply line break or broken water heater, etc.) and correcting the source of the intrusion.

Depending on the cause of loss, SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW/Coronado will be able to work with the proper third party to stop the source of the water intrusion. After assessing the water damage, we will follow the IICRC standards for mitigating the loss in the affected home or business. These services will be handled by our licensed and trained water cleanup professionals.

Preventing mold and mildew

In case you have experienced mildew or mold after water in home or water in business, you know how hard it is to get rid of the problem. Prompt water and flood damage restoration can reduce the chances of mold growth.

Insurance issues

SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW/Coronado will assist you in dealing directly with your insurance company. We will gather a list of the needed repairs and proof of damages to provide to the insurance company.

Having one qualified company for the entire process can save time and keep costs low. We can provide this continuity by supervising a full range of restoration services that will bring a building back to full functionality.

SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW/Coronado received a call from this homeowner in Imperial Beach.  He woke up to a pipe bursting in his living room.  Listed below is his five star google review.

Google Reviews

"It's a terrifying thing when you wake up in the morning and go out into the hallway and find you are standing in 3" of water soaked carpet, on the 2nd floor of a wood building. I was recommended by the local plumber who came and discovered the cause to contact SERVPRO which I did immediately. Within hours the response was overwhelming. I opened the garage door and 7 or 8 techs carrying blowers and vacuums came sweeping in. It felt good as a small business owner in San Diego to feel like Mike Barsnica and the crew had my back. They knew what to do, and did it immediately. And calmed my nerves, no small feat! lol Mike kept me informed thru the entire process and worked around the fact that I needed to stay here during every day of the clean up, demo to finish. They gave me enough space to make it work. It was not an easy, or fun process, but the managers and crews were all top notch. I deal with the HVAC trades in my business life everyday, for 30 years. I notice a high level of professionalism when I see it. Can't recommend you folks enough. Thanks for giving me my home back." Bill B

SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW/Coronado responded to this call on a Sunday Evening.  The water heater in the garage malfunctioned which caused damage in the garage and went through the wall into the living room.

We arrived within an hour of the call and came up with a game plan with the homeowner.  The homeowner filed a claim with Triple A insurance and because we are a preferred vendor the process was seamless.

IICRC

The homeowner was pleased that we only had to make cuts on one side of the wall, which minimized the amount of drywall that had to be replaced.  The flooring in the living room was also affected, so we removed part of the floor and dried the subfloor.  The homeowner was pleased to have his home dried out in just three days, so now the repairs can begin.

Heavy Rain Expected in San Diego

Garage with equipment Need a Free Inspection? Please Call (619) 435-0365

Rain is very important for the natural environment but it can become a problem if it gets into your home.  One of the most common sources of water damage in a home is rain and it can get into your home in so many ways.  San Diego is expecting HEAVY Rain, which brings the threat of flooding.

San Diego Weather

Facebook Page

Rain water can spread within a home by getting absorbed into porous building materials and if the problem is not dealt with right away, the damage can become extensive.  The following are some of the ways rain can cause damage in your home:

  • Roof Leaks: If there is any damage to the roof, rain water can leak into the attic or upper floors and cause structural damage to the walls and ceilings.
  • Flooding: Excessive rain can lead to flooding in your home which causes extensive damage and brings in microorganisms that can be harmful to your health.
  • Mold: Rainy or wet conditions contribute to mold growth because mold needs moisture to thrive. Mold not only causes serious property damage, but can also cause health effects.

Water Heater Causes Water Damage In San Diego Ca

1/14/2021 (Permalink)

Water Heater In Garage SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW/Coronado responded to a water damage call caused by a Water Heater in the garage.

Most water heaters last between 10-13 years, and if one is leaking from the bottom of the tank inside the burner compartment, old age might be the cause.  This is caused by years of sediment building up in the bottom of the water heater tank.  Eventually, the bottom of the tank will rust through and begin to leak.

IICRC Wikipedia

Avoid Water Heater Failure With These 4 Steps

  • Check your water heater’s age. If your water heater reaches its life expectancy, the risk of a slow leak or sudden burst increases. Consequently, your efforts to inspect and maintain the water heater should increase.
  • What is an anode rod and why should you care?  A “sacrificial” anode rod is installed in water heaters to avoid corrosion of the tank. To determine if your anode rod needs to be replaced, it should be inspected once every two years and at least annually once the warranty has expired.
  • Clean out your water heater regularly. Regular water heater maintenance should include removing sediment by flushing the tank every six months. Water heaters can be flushed by attaching a garden hose to the valve at the base of the water heater. Note: Turn off the power and run hot water until it cools before you try to flush the tank since the heated water may be 130 to 140 degrees or more.
  • Get an inspection annually.  Don’t forget to have a plumbing professional inspect your water heater’s shut-off valve and all piping annually. Signs of broken valves and loose or wet joints and rust are a signal that more severe damage is coming.

Congratulations to USO Sailor of the Year

12/17/2020 (Permalink)

Congratulations to USO Sailor of the Year Petty Officer 3rd Class Lauren J. Singer. She displayed quick thinking in an incredibly difficult situation.

She was traveling over the Coronado Bridge near San Diego, California, returning to her on base residence when she noticed a stranded motorist outside his vehicle. Singer asked if he needed any help, and the driver responded that he was fine.

Something in the manner of the driver’s response triggered her intuition and made her feel that something was not right. She noticed the driver putting a rope around his neck. As he was putting a foot on the barrier to jump over the side, Singer rushed to his side, pulling him back. Startled, she grabbed him and asked what he was doing. He coolly responded by saying that today was the day he was going to die.

While Singer was holding the driver, she noticed a knife on the barrier ledge. She cut the rope from around his neck, dropped the knife and kicked it underneath the car. She then identified a gun in his pocket. She removed the firearm and directed other stopped motorists to lock the gun securely in the trunk and call 911.

She stayed with the suicidal driver until the California Highway Patrol arrived. Singer’s willingness to assist a stranger undoubtedly resulted in saving his life. https://coronadotimes.com/news/2020/12/17/uso-sailor-of-the-year-saved-stranger-on-coronado-bridge/

"Christmas Star" shining on 12/21 for first time since 1226

12/17/2020 (Permalink)

Coronado is decorated and festive with holiday lights, and on Monday, December 21, 2020, Coronado residents should look to the skies after sunset for a rare sighting of the bright “Christmas Star.”

The “Christmas Star” isn’t actually a star – it occurs when Jupiter and Saturn are so close to each other that they appear as a single, bright light. The planets will still be hundreds of millions of miles apart, but they appear close because of their position in orbit. This alignment of the planets was last witnessed in 1226 – almost 800 years ago. Astronomers believe there might have been a “Christmas Star” in 1623, but it occurred during sunlight hours so was not visible.

Astronomers named this rare alignment of planets the “Christmas Star” as it might have been what’s referred to as the Star of Bethlehem that guided the three wise men to Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus. While there is some scientific debate if this planet alignment occurred during the year of Jesus’ birth, the event continues to be commonly referred to as the “Christmas Star.”

Viewers wishing to see the ‘star’ should look southwest during the hour after the 4:47pm sunset on December 21, 2020. It will appear like a bright, still airplane, but will not be as bright as the moon. The ‘star’ will be low in the horizon so viewers will need a site unobstructed by trees or buildings. Coronado North Beach, Central Beach, and Shores Beach should provide excellent viewing locations. AccuWeather’s current forecast for the afternoon of December 21 shows mostly sunny skies with 21% cloud cover.

Help a Coronado Restaurant

12/17/2020 (Permalink)

Due to COVID, the Old Goats and Kids Who Care have modified their annual salute to the wounded warriors for 2020 to include other heroes and at the same time benefit local restaurants and employees.

Wounded warriors, first responders, health care workers, and families will be invited to dinner at a Coronado restaurant (currently for take-out or delivery only). Instead of a gift certificate, each honoree will be individually contacted by the restaurant to personalize the experience. Each meal will include a 25% tip for the restaurant employee, so those employees can be helped in a small way.

Instead of a reception as in past years, the Old Goats asks the community to join them in hosting a wounded warrior or other deserving recipient (first responders, health care workers, young military families in need) at one of their participating Coronado restaurants during this holiday season. Restaurants, so far, include Bistro d’Asia, Blue Bridge Hospitality Group restaurants, Brigantine, Island Pasta, Costa Azul, and Miguel’s. The funds that would have been used for a reception have been redirected and the Old Goats and Kids Who Care are hoping to expand this program and continue it for as long as the COVID restrictions hurt our restaurants and their employees.

Smoke Damage Caused By Fire in San Diego

9/8/2020 (Permalink)

Fire Trailer SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW / Coronado (619) 435-0365

In the wake of a fire that has covered homes with smoke and ash, it’s important to begin clean up as soon as possible in order to prevent permanent damage or discoloration from soot residue.

Valley Fire

Here are some tips for fire victims facing clean up

• Ventilate the home. Place a box fan in an open window to draw the air and dust out.
• Clean from top to bottom. Start with the ceilings, walls and fixtures, and work your way down to the contents of the room, then to the floor.
• Vacuum floors and upholstery. Make sure your vacuum cleaner has a high efficiency filter. Otherwise, you risk blowing soot back into the air.
• Some draperies, clothing and machine-washable items may be laundered. Use a mild alkaline cleaner to neutralize the acid in the soot. Fine clothing should be dry cleaned.
• If the damage and residue are heavy, it may be best to hire a professional to thoroughly restore your home and belongings.
• Check with your insurance company to see if smoke damage from outdoor sources is covered by your policy.
• Professional restoration technicians know that damage increases and restoration costs escalate the longer neutralization, corrosion control and cleaning is delayed. When homeowners prolong the restoration of their home, they extend the effects brought on by the smoke exposure.

All the old flooring throughout the house was ripped up and hauled off and the new flooring went in without a hitch. They arranged painters to attend to two rooms that needed fresh paint after much hole repair and patching. Finally, everything was moved back into our house. Every item and surface space was cleaned and sanitized. Our air was sanitized and our house was spotlessly clean when we came home. Everything was done with great care and on time, beautifully. Signs of Mold After Storm

7/29/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Truck in Rain If You See Signs of Mold, Call Us Today – (619) 435-0365

SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW/Coronado tends to receive calls regarding mold weeks or even months after a storm. Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy.

IICRC Standards

Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
  • If your home or business here San Diego has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

One of the concerns that comes with the "shelter in place order" in San Diego, CA, is that people are going to be spending a lot more time at home, which causes a concern with home fires caused by candles.

According to the San Diego Fire Department, fires started by candles cause an estimated $539 million in direct property damage each year.

candle safety tips

Listed below are some safety tips listed by the San Diego Fire Department.

  • Avoid using lighted candles
  • If you do use candles, ensure they are in sturdy metal, glass, or ceramic holders and placed where they cannot be easily knocked down.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Always burn candles on heat resistant surfaces. A candle can melt plastic.
  • Never burn candles near combustibles such as curtains or decorations.
  • Never put candles near windows or exits.
  • Never leave candles within reach of small children or pets.
  • Keep burning candles at least four inches apart.
  • Votive and scented candles turn to liquid as they burn. Be sure they are in a glass or metal container.
  • Extinguish candles before leaving a room or falling asleep.
  • Keep the candle wick neatly trimmed down to 1/4 inch. Trimming the wick keeps the candle burning slower with less smoke.
  • When a candle's flame gets too high, blow it out, let it cool, trim the wick again to 1/4 inch, and then relight.

Water Damage Caused by Rain

SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW / Coronado Why SERVPRO News And Updates

Rain is very important for the natural environment but it can become a problem if it gets into your home.  One of the most common sources of water damage in a home is rain and it can get into your home in so many ways.

Excessive rainfall can lead to considerable damage in a home as it has the potential to flood basements, ruin foundations and building materials, and contribute to mold growth.

Rain water can spread within a home by getting absorbed into porous building materials and if the problem is not dealt with right away, the damage can become extensive.  The following are some of the ways rain can cause damage in your home:

  • Seepage: Rain commonly enters homes by seeping through cracks in the foundation. This is much more likely to happen if the gutters are not draining properly and rain water gathers near the sides of the house.  Too much seepage can begin to ruin the foundation.
Mold not only causes serious property damage, but also threatens your health.

SERVPRO of San Diego Bay SW/Coronado is here locally to answer any questions you might have.

We love sharing letters and testimonials from our satisfied customers. Here is one we received after a flood in North Park, Ca.

David, had a major flood due to a 90-year-old water main that burst, creating a sink hole, which caused flooding in homes, streets, and parks.

"Have you just been wiped out? Then you'll want Scott - NOW. I'm writing this three days into a major flood, and on a weekend- Scott has been here everyday as well as tending to other customers at the same time! I am extremely impressed with his and his crew's work ethic. I'm going through this flooding issue a second time in about a year (due to the city's crappy infrastructure) - and SERVPRO has been an actual dream to work with. These guys had me dug out, mud'ed out, washed, and in the process of drying before anyone else on the street! Like I said, they are still working on my place as I write this - but the care & professionalism by Scott & crew has been so impressive that I just had to write this. THANK YOU SCOTT & SERVPRO TEAM!!"

This is a client that experienced water damage for the second time in the last couple of years.  Listed below is her five star yelp review.

"HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND! SERVPRO of Coronado responded to my call on Friday evening and was at my house within an hour after an unforeseen leak occurred in my second story master bedroom.  On the initial call, we were advised what actions to take right away before they arrived.  Once at our home, a survey of the area where the leak as well as adjacent walls and floors occurred, and a recommendation for a dry out was implemented.  We were in very active touch via text throughout the weekend to monitor the progress and 2 additional visits occurred the following week to determine the progress.  Ultimately a dry out was all we needed and SERVPRO's immediate response helped save us thousands of dollars as well as an insurance claim for damage.  We were so impressed with their professionalism, customer service, expertise and response time.  Of note, the same chapter of SERVPRO responded to another serious water damage issue that occurred in our prior home a couple of years ago and I was equally impressed with their service.  Will always use and recommend in the future if need be"

Do I Have Water Damage??

7/9/2019 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Coronado / San Diego Bay SW for a free inspection. (619) 435-0365

Water damage can be deceptive. Water penetrates into structural cavities creating trapped pockets of saturation. The detection of water in these areas can often only be discovered with sophisticated moisture detection meters. Undetected moisture will continue to cause damage. This damage, at a minimum, will cause odors. Greater damage will surface when materials delaminate, shrink, split and further deteriorate to where costly repairs are required.

More than just removing excess water, SERVPRO of Coronado / San Diego Bay SW restoration professionals have the knowledge and equipment to further dry a home or facility (including substructure materials) completely back to preloss conditions. Through timely response and the careful monitoring of water damage, mold and other health issues can be prevented. If water damage has been present too long, mold will occur.

Our professionals have the training and experience to identify moisture sources, evaluate mold growth (visible or suspected), contain damage, remove contamination and dry materials to ensure that mold will not return.

SERVPRO Disaster Recovery Team Trailer Have Questions? Call Us Today-(619) 435-0365

Many Children who set fires lack both supervision and fire safety education.  The following are a few things, according to the Burn Institute, that you can do to make sure your children are safe.

        Educate your children that:

  • Fire is a tool, not a toy.
  • Fire is dangerous and that it can kill.
  • All fires, even small ones, can spread quickly.
  • Even adults must follow fire safety rules.
  • Leave matches alone.

       Other things you can do:

  • Supervise children at all times
  • Store matches and lighters in a secure place away from a child's reach
  • Occasionally check under your child's bed and inside the closets for burned materials. Parents often discover the first signs of evidence that a child may be playing with fire.
  • Teach children not to touch matches and lighter, but to tell an adult where they are and have the adult put them in a safe place.
  • Explain the importance of only using matches as a tool and when an adult is present.

The #1 Place Scald Injuries Occur is in the kitchen

There is a dilemma about what to do regarding people who live in fire zones.  An analysis by the Los Angeles Times showed there are 1.1 million structures in the state's highest-risk fire areas.  San Diego is # 2 behind Los Angeles with 88,000 buildings in the highest-risk fire areas.

“We’re going to continue to have fires,” CAL FIRE Deputy Chief David Nissen told Smith. “They’re going to be a part of people’s lives in Southern California and California generally. It’s what we do to adjust to minimize risk.”

Hopefully no homes or offices are damaged by fires this year, but it is inevitable that the smoke and soot from wildfires will reach all corners of the county.

If you have a strong smell of smoke or soot in your home it is usually covered by your homeowners or renters insurance to have your home and belongings cleaned and deodorized from top to bottom.

With summer approaching the following are a few fire and burn safety tips from The Burn Institute.

Sun Safety

  • When going outdoors always wear a sunscreen with a minimum SPF 25 with UVA and UVB protection and re-apply often and after swimming-serious sunburns can occur even when it is cloudy or overcast.
  • Wear dark sunglasses to protect your eyes and wear a broad-rimmed hat to protect your head and neck.

Campfires

  • Always use a designated fire pit.
  • Never leave a campfire unattended.
  • Always supervise children around campfires.
  • Before leaving your campsite, make sure the fire is properly extinguished-douse and stir the fire with water.

Hotel Safety

  • Upon arriving at your hotel room locate two exits closest to your room
  • Read the fire evacuation plan carefully. If one is not posted in your room, request one from the front desk.
  • At the first sign of smoke stay close to the ground and head for that exit-in most cases it's the smoke that kills people and not the fire.
  • If you are trapped in your room turn on the bathroom vent, open the windows, phone 9-1-1 for help and give them your room number, fill the bath with water, stuff the cracks of your door with wet towels and sheets.

Here are top 3 most common causes of house fires as identified by the National Fire Protection Association.

From 2012-2016, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 8,200 home structure fires that were started by candles per year. These fires caused an annual average of 80 deaths, 770 injuries and $264 million in direct property damage.

Facts and figures

During the five-year period of 2012-2016:

Candles

Candles caused 2% of reported home fires, 3% of home fire deaths, 7% of home fire injuries, and 4% of the direct property damage in home fires. Roughly one-third (37%) of home candle fires started in bedrooms. These fires caused 30% of the associated deaths and 50% of the associated injuries

Falling asleep was a factor in 11% percent of the home candle fires and 21% of the associated deaths.

  • On average, 23 home candle fires were reported per day.
  • Three of every five (60%) of home candle fires occurred when some form of combustible material was left or came too close to the candle.
  • December is the peak time of year for home candle fires. In December, 12% of home candle fires began with decorations compared to 4% the rest of the year.
  • Cooking
What you should know about home cooking safety
  • Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the stove or stovetop.
  • Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food.
  • If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stovetop.

3. Electrical

Facts & figures
  • In 2012-2016, electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in 35,100 reported home structure fire, on average, per year.
  • These fires involved equipment such as wiring, lighting, cords and plugs.
  • Electrical distribution or lighting equipment ranked first in direct property damage, and third among the major fire causes in the number of home fires, and tied for third in home fire deaths and home fire injuries.

Moisture and The Impact of Mold Growth

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Coronado / San Diego Bay SW (619) 435-0365

Exposure to damp and moldy environments may cause a variety of health effects.  Listed below are some pointers on minimizing mold growth in your home or business

  • When water leaks or spills occur indoors - ACT QUICKLY.
If wet or damp materials or areas are dried 24-48 hours after a leak or spill happens, in most cases mold will not grow.
  • Clean and repair roof gutters regularly.
  • Make sure the ground slopes away from the building foundation, so that water does not enter or collect around the foundation.
  • Keep air conditioning drip pans clean and the drain lines unobstructed and flowing properly. Moisture and Mold
    PREVENTION and control tips
  • Keep indoor humidity low. If possible, keep indoor humidity below 60 percent (ideally between 30 and 50 percent) relative humidity. Relative humidity can be measured with a moisture or humidity meter, a small, inexpensive ($10-$50)
instrument available at many hardware stores.
  • If you see condensation or moisture collecting on windows, walls or pipes - ACT QUICKLY to dry the wet surface and reduce the moisture/water source. Condensation can be a sign of high humidity.

Actions that will help to reduce humidity:

  • Vent appliances that produce moisture, such as clothes dryers, stoves, and kerosene heaters to the outside where possible. (Combustion appliances such as stoves and kerosene heaters produce water vapor and will increase the humidity unless vented to the outside.)
  • Use air conditioners and/or de-humidifiers when needed.
  • Run the bathroom fan or open the window when showering. Use exhaust fans or open windows whenever cooking, running the dishwasher or dishwashing, etc.

Actions that will help prevent condensation:

  • Reduce the humidity (see preceding page).
  • Increase ventilation or air movement by opening doors and/or windows, when practical.
  • Use fans as needed.
  • Cover cold surfaces, such as cold water pipes, with insulation.
    Increase air temperature

SERVPRO of Coronado/San Diego Bay SW is here to help and ensure that your home or business is dry and safe to be in.

Helpful Tips in Preventing Mold Growth

4/19/2019 (Permalink)

If You See Signs of Mold, Call SERVPRO of Coronado / San Diego Bay SW today- (619) 435-0365

  • Keep humidity levels in your home as low as you can—no higher than 50%--all day long. An air conditioner or dehumidifier will help you keep the level low. You can buy a meter to check your home’s humidity at a home improvement store. Humidity levels change over the course of a day so you will need to check the humidity levels more than once a day.
  • Be sure the air in your home flows freely. Use exhaust fans that vent outside your home in the kitchen and bathroom. Make sure your clothes dryer vents outside your home.
  • Fix any leaks in your home’s roof, walls, or plumbing so mold does not have moisture to grow.
  • Clean up and dry out your home fully and quickly (within 24–48 hours) after a flood.
  • Clean bathrooms with mold-killing products.
  • Remove or replace carpets and upholstery that have been soaked and cannot be dried right away.

SERVPRO of Coronado / San Diego Bay SW Testimonial 619-435-0365

SERVPRO of Coronado / San Diego Bay SW wanted to share another review from one of our previous clients.  Please feel free to read other reviews on the testimonial section of our website.

"It's very rare for me to write a review, but when I encounter the outstanding service that I received from Scott and his team at SERVPRO, I feel that it warrants the time.

My upstairs neighbor had a water leak, which ended up coming through my ceiling, damaging my drywall and soaking the wood frame.  I had no idea what steps needed to be taken or where to begin.  Both my insurance agent and my neighbors highly recommended SERVPRO, and I can see why.  They not only walked me through the entire process, exceeding their services, they also helped me to arrange for the drywall and painting. Their service was impeccable, they always gave a very tight window of when they would show up, and were never late.  They were quick, friendly, clean, officiant, they listened to me and were extremely reassuring.  I give them a solid 10!"

Remediating Mold in Your Coronado Home

4/6/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Coronado / San Diego Bay SW has years of experience in helping our customers through each step to put you back into your home.

SERVPRO of Coronado / San Diego Bay SW uses different cleaning methods for each unique surface to remediate mold

Mold is often undetectable in homes until it has become a significant problem. Not every type of mold has that distinctive, ‘musty’ odor and if the growth started behind a wall or in the attic, the smell is not noticeable until the mold has grown into a large colony of spores.

Restoring a home due to the effects of mold damage is a task that needs a professional service. SERVPRO keeps a trained crew on 24-hour notice to support our neighbors and customers. We have some of the best-trained personnel in the industry to clean mold from the property and safely remove it from each home.

These technicians first determine the type of surface infested. This inspection decides both the cleaning methods needed and how much time may be required to complete the job. We usually divide surfaces into porous, nonporous, and semi-porous categories.

Porous surfaces are typically building materials and fabrics; drywall and upholstery for example. They are often cleanable, but if the mold is very thick or has grown into the material, we dispose of it. Our cleaning methods for these surfaces involve vacuuming them with special HEPA filters that catch tiny amounts of loose mold, even a single spore.

After finishing vacuuming, we move on to using spray bottles with an antimicrobial cleaner and foaming agents to dampen the surface. Wetting loosens the mold and allows technicians to remove it with cloths and sponges.

Nonporous surfaces are the easiest to clean. This category includes metal and glass tabletops as well as marble and smooth stone kitchen countertops. In many cases, we can remove the mold with dry cloths and sponges. Technicians wipe down the surfaces from top to bottom to prevent accidentally leaving spores at the top or along the sides. If the mold layer is thick, we vacuum it first before dry wiping.

Semi-porous surfaces (concrete and wood decks for example) require methods not acceptable on other surfaces. Affected surfaces may need sanding to wire brushing and other abrasive tools to dig out the mold. The cleaners we use on these surfaces would mar or otherwise destroy glass and metal surfaces. If mold has penetrated the surface of the wood or concrete, technicians may have to sand them down by hand or with a power sander to remove it.

Returning your home to its pre-mold condition is not a quick or easy processes. SERVPRO of Coronado / San Diego Bay SW has years of experience in helping our customers through each step to put you back into your home. If you need us, call (619) 435-0365 today to set up an inspection.

Why is Mold Dangerous?

7/3/2017 (Permalink)

How does mold affect you?

Some people are sensitive to molds. For these people, exposure to molds can cause symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation. Some people, such as those with serious allergies to molds, may have more severe reactions. Severe reactions may occur among workers exposed to large amounts of molds in occupational settings, such as farmers working around moldy hay. Severe reactions may include fever and shortness of breath. Some people with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may develop mold infections in their lungs.

In 2004 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people; with asthma symptoms in people with asthma; and with hypersensitivity pneumonitis in individuals susceptible to that immune-mediated condition. The IOM also found limited or suggestive evidence linking indoor mold exposure and respiratory illness in otherwise healthy children.

Other recent studies have suggested a potential link of early mold exposure to development of asthma in some children, particularly among children who may be genetically susceptible to asthma development, and that selected interventions that improve housing conditions can reduce morbidity from asthma and respiratory allergies, but more research is needed in this regard.

Specific Recommendations:

  • Keep humidity levels as low as you can—no higher than 50%–all day long. An air conditioner or dehumidifier will help you keep the level low. Bear in mind that humidity levels change over the course of a day with changes in the moisture in the air and the air temperature, so you will need to check the humidity levels more than once a day.
  • Use an air conditioner or a dehumidifier during humid months.
  • Be sure the home has adequate ventilation, including exhaust fans.
  • Add mold inhibitors to paints before application.
  • Clean bathrooms with mold killing products.
  • Do not carpet bathrooms and basements.
  • Remove or replace previously soaked carpets and upholstery.

Sensitive individuals should avoid areas that are likely to have mold, such as compost piles, cut grass, and wooded areas. Inside homes, mold growth can be slowed by controlling humidity levels and ventilating showers and cooking areas.

A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture, and Your Home

3/14/2017 (Permalink)

Mold behind drywall.

The mold spores will not grow if moisture is not present.  Indoor mold growth can and should be prevented or controlled by controlling moisture indoors.  If there is mold growth in your home, you must clean up the mold and fix the water problem.  If you clean up the mold, but don't fix the water problem, then, most likely, the mold problem will come back.
